Laptop on a wooden coffee table with Database of Medieval Publishing Networks front page open.

Medieval Publishing was a project led by Samu Niskanen. Funded by European Research Council and based in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki this project lasted five years from April 2017 to September 2022.

About

In this project clients wish was to enhance the old design of the database of Medieval Publishings. Goal was to do desktop layout only, since the target group was mostly historians and researchers who most likely will use desktop only.

First we started with benchmarking databases with search engines and making some wireframes with just block sketches for me to see how things would go. This way I can see the positioning of elements quickly. I presented the greyscale sketches to the client.

Finished Product

In finished product search is first thing on the landing page since that’s the first thing users most likely will do. Below that one can browse specific databases (people, places and publishings) that are colour coded for easier identification. Handover included designs for the whole database, a component library and styles for fonts and colours.

My role:

  • Benchmarking database sites and how they present different categories and information
  • Drawing wireframes and UI-Design
  • Presenting results to client
